What are human ashes?

Human ashes, also known as cremated remains, are the ashes that remain after a person's body has been cremated. They are produced by the process of cremation, which involves exposing the person who has died body to high heat and reducing it to bone fragments. The bone fragments are then processed into fine particles, which are what we commonly refer to as ashes.

The ashes typically have a grey or white colour and a powdery texture. They are often quite fine and may feel a bit gritty or slightly abrasive to the touch. Sometimes there will be a few hard fragments mixed in, which is usually bone fragments that haven’t completely broken down during the cremation process. However, in general, human ashes have a consistent appearance and texture that is easily recognisable.

It's worth remembering that some people may find the appearance and texture of ashes to be distressing or difficult to handle emotionally. This is why at Stag Cremations we always hand deliver the ashes personally to you and only when the time is right for you as we understand the importance of taking time to process what’s happened and your emotions in your own way.
